According to a recent federal study that was done, people who visit the hospitals in Metro Atlanta are at a higher risk of developing an infection or suffering from a medical error than the national average.

The study looked at prestigious hospitals in the area and compared them to hospitals nationwide. The study revealed that most Atlanta hospitals had at least one case of a deadly catheter-related bloodstream infection, Emory University Hospital had the highest rates in the state and one the highest rates in the nation.

There were 36 central line infections reported in Emory. The data also showed that there were eight cases of foreign objects being left inside of patients in metro Atlanta. Georgia does not require hospitals to report medical errors or infection rates publicly.

Dutch researchers have said that surgical checklists could prevent mistakes during surgical procedures and cut back on the number of medical malpractice lawsuits.

The researchers looked over records from the largest medical liability insurer to find that nearly a third of the mistakes could have been caught with a checklist.

Many injuries caused to patients are in surgery, so if hospitals want to reduce deaths dramatically, the researches say the checklists should be used.

The complaint stated that there was medical negligence when a woman had a cystoscopy surgery following a hysterectomy. The complaint also said that the woman underwent too many surgeries in short amount of time and that physicians failed to refer her to a more skilled doctor.
