Obama malpractice agenda in place

Posted on June 11th, 2010 No Comments

President Obama began to offer grant money to a variety of hospitals and universities today to reduce the total expense of medical malpractice lawsuits nationwide.

The grant-based program, costing the federal government $25 million, is what some see as a concession to Congressional Republican pressures and what others see as a natural extension to the previously established health care reforms passed earlier this year. Regardless of politics, President Obama had promised Congress that a treatment, separate from the larger health care reform law, would be pulled together to address excess spending related to medical malpractice suits.

The grants are hoping to cut back on costs related to the lawsuits by reducing premiums for liability policy-holders, better informing health care professionals on how to avoid causing injury, and reconnecting patients to doctors when a rift in communication causes mistakes to arise. The grants are also in place to redress some complains of malpractice suits in the U.S. court system.

If you have been injured while receiving treatment due to the delay of hospital staff to diagnose and treat your ailment, you may be eligible for compensation. Police officer’s condition upgraded from serious to stable

Posted on June 10th, 2010 No Comments

Following a Wednesday crash, a Fulton County police officer has had his medical condition improve from serious to stable.

With his car found crashed into a tree on Wednesday around 10:45 p.m. on Butner Road, the officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to recover. The car hit the tree on the passenger’s side. Police investigators are unsure what caused the crash and what exactly happened at the time of the collision. They received a call through the 911 dispatcher that an officer had crashed and struck a tree after a nearby civilian saw the wreckage and dialed for help.

The recovering officer had been with the police force for 11 months prior to the incident. He sustained a fracture in one of his vertebrae and a head laceration.

The crash is still under investigation from Fulton County police officers.

Back aches commonly misdiagnosed, brought to surgery

Posted on June 9th, 2010 No Comments

With estimates reaching $86 billion on treatments, many Americans have taken to a quick-fix route on solving their back pain problems. As money spent increases, the level of actual treatment and recovery seems to have stayed the same.

This trend leaves some doctors worried that people are accepting the offer of surgery far more than they should be, and, in return, doctors are offering surgical fixes and unnecessary treatments more than normal protocol would. According to most procedures, back aches are not even supposed to be scanned with an MRI or similar tool unless the patient’s pain has lingered for at least six months. However, one survey of the health care industry focused in on back pain, and found that one in every three Medicare patients were prematurely scanned for their aches, with MRIs taken as early as a month after the pain was first observed.

Some medical workers offer that most back pain, estimated up to 90% of cases, that gets reported to doctors would go away after a few weeks.

If your doctor has put you through misdiagnosed back treatments, including unnecessary surgery, you may be eligible for compensation. Contact the Atlanta medical malpractice lawyers of Webb, Wade & Taylor, LLC, by calling 770-631-1811 today.

Suit comes from garden collapse

Posted on June 4th, 2010 No Comments

A widow is suing the Atlanta Botanical Garden along with three other workers over an incident that occurred in December 2008.

According to the suit, the scaffolding involved in building the Canopy Walk was not properly secured, causing its collapse. The woman and workers have blamed the garden and the construction company for negligence in the wrongful death of one man and the injury of his three co-workers. The families filing lawsuits have noted that proper conditions were not established by either the garden or construction company, and the workers were doing their job as asked of them when tragedy struck.

The construction worker who died was 56-years-old and was survived by his wife, who is filing one of the lawsuits, and his eleven children.

Two brothers were involved in the accident, leading them to suffer from multiple fractures and spine-related infirmaries.

All of the men in the accident were working to pour concrete for a contractor to complete the new building.

Chemistry explosion injures two

An explosion critically injured two Georgia Tech students early this morning.

According to reports, a pair of science majors, 20 and 21, studying aerospace engineering and materials science respectively, decided to set up a pyrotechnic experiment behind a Zeta Beta Tau fraternity house around 12:30 a.m. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatments for their first- and second-degree burns around their upper bodies.

The university announced that the school’s Environmental Health and Safety team would be working with the Atlanta Fire Department to get a better understanding of precisely what materials and what conditions were present in the accident.

A mechanical engineering student was at a next-door fraternity house, and characterized the accident as a basic chemistry experiment gone awry. According to him, the materials involved, being aluminium and rust powders, can easily be heated with a butane fire to cause an impressive pyrotechnical spectacle. He noted that the reaction can cause extreme temperature in the thousands degrees Celsius, and can become volatile if a pocket of oxygen is present when the heat grows.

Seat belt safety campaigns begin

Posted on May 26th, 2010 No Comments

The Atlanta law enforcement community is backing a pair of safety belt campaigns that kicked off Monday, and will be ongoing through Memorial Day.

Both Operation Click It or Ticket and All-American Buckle-Up Week began as national enforcement campaigns centered around safety precautions over the Memorial Day weekend, a traditional vacation time that sees an increase of drivers on the highways. The week makes aims to join law enforcement officers with civic and community leaders to educate the public about the necessity of seat belts for the well-being of both drivers and passengers. Georgia has a primary seat belt law, meaning that any driver caught without a seat belt will be pulled over and fined. The precautionary campaigns will also focus on making sure that parents properly buckle up their child passengers, ensuring the proper safety procedures for all involved.

Operation C.A.R.E. also will be running through Memorial Day weekend, which aims to reduce car accidents in general. The three campaigns together mean increased police presence and visibility for the public on the highways.

Passenger dogs need safety harnesses too

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

Providing pets with harnesses, travel crates, or restraints could save their lives in case of car accidents, and pose less of a risk to drivers and other passengers.

According to an Atlanta survey, 43% of pet owners allow their dogs to ride in the front seat, and 14% allow them to ride in the driver’s lap. Not only does this pose potential risk to the pet, but can also prove as an additional distraction to the driver. Veterinarians warn that dogs may want to jump into your lap or arms while driving, causing a quick loss of attention to the road.

Sudden braking or an accident can be disastrous for not only humans, but canine companions squeezed into tight, unprotected spots. Dogs can just as easily be throw around a car as humans if proper safety precautions are not heeded.

Restraints attached to truck beds can also save lives and prevent pet injury. If a dog is leaning off the edge of a truck bed and traveling at a sufficient speed, a quick turn or bump may send them hurdling out of the vehicle.

Simple safety devices can be purchased at pet stores, and easily contribute to the well-being of both humans and pets.

Woman almost dies in spontaneous airbag release

Posted on April 23rd, 2010 No Comments

A college student was nearly killed when the airbag in her Honda Civic spontaneously deployed as she waited at a traffic light, authorities said. Several sharp pieces of metal from the safety device went into her neck, authorities said, and one piece cut an artery in her neck. That piece severed her carotid artery, doctors said, which supplies blood to the brain.

The incident left her with a huge scar on her neck. She also suffered a broken arm from the incident. A Honda spokesperson said the spontaneous deployment of an airbag is extremely rare, but woman’s lawyer said a safety device should never cause injury regardless of the circumstances.
