The number of drunk driving accidents in Atlanta have decreased by nearly 30 percent in the past five years.

According to a new federal report, last yearhad the lowest number in nearly two decades. Some officials have attributed to decline to a slow economy because people are not wanting to spend as much money on alcohol so they are staying at home to drink. Nearly 1 in 50 people have admitted to driving drunk in 2010 based on a telephone survey of 210,000 people.

This means that about 4 million Americans drive drunk a year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that there has also been a decline in the number of people that have been killed as a result of drunk driving crashes. The number dropped from 11,711 in 2008 to 10,839 in 2009.

The arrest of the Atlanta Braves pitcher, Derek Lowe, in April when he was charged with driving under the influence was caught by the dashcam and it has now been released by the Georgia State Patrol.

The incident occurred in April when police pulled Lowe over after suspecting him of drunk driving and racing another vehicle. In the video, Lowe states over and over again that he was not racing, but police insisted that they had proof.

The car that he was allegedly racing was also pulled over and he admitted to police that he was in fact racing so police let him go. Lowe then refused a breathalyzer and a field sobriety test was done, which police say that he failed. After lack of evidence the DUI charge was dropped.

Georgia Bill Aims to Prevent Drunk Driving

Posted on March 16th, 2011 No Comments

Bill 41 is legislation being considered in Georgia’s Senate that would require drivers who have repeatedly been convicted of drunk driving to have a breathalyzer device in their cars that would prevent them from starting their car if their blood-alcohol level is over the legal limit.

Almost everyone is in support of the bill, however, some disagree on the issue of who should have the breathalyzers installed in their cars. Two women who have lost love ones to drunk driving are pushing for the breathalyzers to be installed in the cars of anyone who has been charged with drunk driving, no matter how many times or how high their blood-alcohol content was. Others have argued that the bill should only apply to those who have repeatedly driven while drunk and have had a blood-alcohol level that was almost double the legal limit.

Regardless of the minor details that are still being worked out in the bill, it is a positive step towards decreasing the amount of deaths and injuries caused by drunk driving.

Study shows that ignition interlock systems cut down on drunken driving

Posted on February 24th, 2011 No Comments

According to a new study, ignition devices are helping to prevent people convicted of DUI from re-offending. The study shows that the re-arrest rate has decreased by 67 percent after ignition interlock systems are installed compared to drivers who have suspended licenses.

The study was done by researchers at the Community Guide branch of the Center of Disease Control and Prevention. Around 200,000 cars in America have this device in it. Some are fighting to get these installed more frequently. More than 1.4 million people are charged with drunken driving every year and over a million are convicted.

The devices are generally mounted on the dashboard and a tube is attached where a person can blow into it in order to determine their blood-alcohol content.
