Man awarded $7.5 million in slip and fall case

Posted on January 4th, 2012 No Comments

A California man has been awarded $7.5 million by a San Diego Superior Court jury for a head injury he suffered after slipping in a Starbucks.

The man was at a local Starbucks shop in 2008 when he slipped on part of the tile floor a store manager was mopping. Complications from his head injury have prevented him from returning to work as a chiropractor since the fall.

Starbucks Coffee Co. was found negligent by the jury for failing to maintain its property. $1 million will go to compensate the man’s wife for loss of consortium and the rest will go towards the man’s lost income, medical expenses, and loss of enjoyment of life.

NTSB urges ban on cellphone use

Posted on December 20th, 2011 No Comments

The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended a nationwide ban on the use of cellphones and other portable electronics while driving. In the past it has urged states to outlaw cellphones for commercial truck and bus drivers, but this is the most widespread ban the board has proposed.

A survey the board conducted of 6000 Americans revealed that a fifth of all drivers have emailed or texted while driving. Many drivers said they did not believe they were a danger to others when using their phones, but believe other drivers are.

The increasing number of fatal accidents caused by distracted drivers has greatly concerned the NTSB. Last year a 19-year old caused a deadly multi-car pileup after he received or sent 11 text messages in 11 minutes. He and a 15 year-old died in the crash.

Two people inside the elevator sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for psychological trauma after witnessing the entire event.

A defect was found in one of the elevators this June during an inspection. The New York City Department of Buildings will investigate the accident.

Arsenic found in apple and grape juices

Posted on December 7th, 2011 No Comments

A Consumer Reports investigation has discovered that fruit juices, such as apple and grape juices, contain dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic. These findings contradict the FDA’s statement that arsenic found in juices is organic and “essentially harmless.”

Inorganic arsenic is a known carcinogen that can cause lung, bladder, and skin cancer. It can also increase one’s risk of cardiovascular disease, immunodeficiencies, and type 2 diabetes. In 10% of the juice samples Consumer Reports tested from five different brands, inorganic arsenic levels exceeded the federal drinking water standards.

There is currently no federal arsenic limits for juices or most foods. Public drinking water cannot contain arsenic at levels exceeding 10 parts per billion.

Georgia Police urge drivers to be cautious this weekend

Posted on November 23rd, 2011 No Comments

Last year in Georgia over Thanksgiving weekend there were 2,571 car accidents throughout the state. Those accidents caused 1,099 injuries, with 13 of those being fatal.

This year, an increased number of drivers will take to the roads in Georgia to get to their desired location. Additional Georgi State Patrol will be stationed in different areas to try to prevent reckless driving accidents.

Distracted drivers, intoxicated drivers and unsafe drivers are the main reasons why the amount of accidents and injuries pile up over the holiday weekend. It is imperative for everyone in a motor vehicle to be wearing a seat belt while traveling.
