Yoga Injuries
Yoga has many benefits. Along with the obvious ones present with all forms of exercise, yoga has the additional positive effects of limberness, mental relaxation, and mind-body awareness. Yoga has also become very popular and is now available in fancy studios as well as most gyms. But despite all the benefits and its overwhelming popularity, yoga can easily result in serious injury.
Why Yoga is Dangerous
Yoga requires its practitioners to engage in a variety of odd positions which force the body to contort in ways that are often not natural. When these positions are done even remotely wrong, the following can happen:
- Sprains in the arms and legs
- Muscles pulls or tears
- Ripped tendons or busted cartilage
- Broken bones
- Broken necks or backs resulting in permanent paralysis
One of the biggest factors in yoga related injuries is inexperienced or reckless instructors. An instructor should always be aware of his or her pupil’s personal limits and never, ever pressure them to push beyond them. They should provide blocks and stretching devices that can be used by individuals who are unable to do certain poses.
There should always be an alternate motion for yoga students with limited flexibility or with injuries. Instructors should ask before any class if anyone in attendance has any injuries that may keep them from performing certain poses. When these poses are preformed by the rest of the class, the instructor should come up to the student with the injury and provide them with an alternative pose.
