The Reality of Dental Malpractice
Millions of Americans experience some degree of anxiety about visiting the dentist. This anxiety ranges from a slight dislike to intense, debilitating phobias. But while it may seem silly to have any worries about going to the dentist, there is a possibility for serious, negligent mistakes at the dentist just as there are at the doctor’s office.
Negligent mistakes on the part of a dentist are refereed to as dental malpractice. To qualify as malpractice, these mistakes must be pretty serious. Many people are not aware that a dentist is just as liable for mistakes he or she may make as an MD is.
Some common mistakes made at the dentist include:
- Pulling the wrong teeth or pulling multiple teeth when only one needed to be extracted.
- Applying crowns or bridges when they are not needed.
- Using improperly cleaned tools which when used cause infection or illness.
- Cutting the roof or sides of the mouth.
Failing to Diagnose
Another major component of dental malpractice is the failure to catch cancers of the mouth or gums. If a dentist sees a patient and either does not catch cancer despite obvious signs or he or she fails to properly direct the patient to an oncologist, the dentist can be sued for dental malpractice.
