The Dangers of Over the Counter Supplements
In the last decade or so there has been a huge trend towards the use of natural medicines or “supplements.” These medicines can be found over the counter at most pharmacies, grocery stores, or drug store chains.
Popular supplements include those touting:
- Weight loss
- Depression or anxiety relief
- Relief from the symptoms of PMS
- Joint health
- Heart health
- Menopause ease
- Hair or breast growth
No Regulation
The biggest issue with the promotion and use of supplements is that they are not regulated by a governing agency. The FDA does not give these products even a second glance before they are placed on shelves throughout the country.
While the FDA does make some mistakes with prescription drugs, there are at the very least a number of controlled studies done on the potential side effects and efficacy of the drugs. Many people get confused and tend to believe that because something is referred to as a “supplement” or that it is “natural” that it is somehow completely safe. This is absolutely not true.
Just like prescription drugs, these over the counter supplements can result in serious side effects only the potential side effects are not clearly known as is the case with prescription medications. Another danger with supplements is that the exact dosage a person should take can never be determined.
