Serious Slips

Most Americans grew up with cartoons or even live action movies that attempted to pull at least a large part of their laughs by having characters continually slip and fall. The old slipping on a banana routine is practically burned into most people’s subconscious.

This may be one of the reasons that few people, unless they are elderly, think much about the potential threat of slipping and falling. But major slips are not at all like they were in cartoons in which a person would take a giant spill and immediately stand up again with nothing more than a slightly perturbed look on his or her face. In reality, a slip and fall can result in, best case scenario, a nasty bruise or bruised tail bone and, worst case scenario, a shattered hip or even traumatic brain injury if the head snaps back onto the floor after the fall.

Avoiding Slips

It is the responsibility of various property owners to protect patrons from accidental slips and falls. This responsibility is the same for any work place environment. In order to protect against injury, the following steps should be taken:

  • Clean up–the second a liquid hits the ground, the spill should be immediately mopped up
  • Warning–a bright colored warning sign should be placed near any liquid or icy area
  • Extra care–if it is raining, snowing or icy out, it is important to make sure that steps and outdoor walkways are cleared of any accumulating ice, snow, or water pooling
